Description: Dated 1936, this photograph shows the construction of the athletic field at Carrollton High School in West Carrollton, Ohio. This construction was most likely a part of the Works Progress Administration project, a government office that hired unemployed Americans to work on various government projects from April 8, 1935 to June 30, 1943. In the first six months that the WPA existed, more than 173,000 Ohioans, including both men and women, found employment through this program. More than 1, 500 unemployed teachers in Ohio found work through the WPA teaching illiterate adults how to read. In twelve separate counties, primarily in southeastern Ohio, more than twenty-five percent of families had at least one member working for the WPA during the late 1930s. By the end of 1938, these various workers had built or improved 12,300 miles of roads and streets and constructed 636 public buildings, several hundred bridges, hundreds of athletic fields, and five fish hatcheries. WPA employees made improvements to thousands of more buildings, roads, and parks within Ohio. WPA artists also painted a number of murals in Ohio post offices. This photograph is one of the many visual materials collected for use in the Ohio Guide. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Works Progress Administration by executive order to create jobs for the large numbers of unemployed laborers, as well as artists, musicians, actors, and writers. The Federal Arts Program, a sector of the Works Progress Administration, included the Federal Writers’ Project, one of the primary goals of which was to complete the America Guide series, a series of guidebooks for each state which included state history, art, architecture, music, literature, and points of interest to the major cities and tours throughout the state. Work on the Ohio Guide began in 1935 with the publication of several pamphlets and brochures. The Reorganization Act of 1939 consolidated the Works Progress Administration and other agencies into the Federal Works Administration, and the Federal Writers’ Project became the Federal Writers’ Project in Ohio. The final product was published in 1940 and went through several editions. In August 1976, the Ohio American Revolution Bicentennial Advisory Committee (OARBAC) began the Spirit of Ohio Bicentennial Photo Contest as part of a larger effort in Ohio to celebrate the 1976 American Bicentennial. The contest was meant to document "the spirit and character of the people and places which represent Ohio during [the] bicentennial year," and to create a permanent photographic archive of the year's festivity for use by future researchers. Work on the construction of the Dixie Highway started in 1915, a conception of automobile producer Carl G. Fisher. The highway, made up of a connection of paved roads, stretches from the Straits of Mackinac, in Mackinac, Michigan to Miami, Florida. Divided into two sections, a western route makes stops in South Bend, Indiana; Louisville, Kentucky; and Atlanta, Georgia: while an eastern route makes stops in Detroit, Michigan; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Jacksonville, Florida. In Ohio, Dixie Highway passes through Toledo, Dayton, and Cincinnati. The highway is now U.S. route 25 to Cincinnati. The building to the right of the canal reads "Dayton Carpet Cleaning and Upholstering Co." Work began on the Miami and Erie Canal in 1825 and was completed in 1845. During the peak of construction, more than four thousand laborers worked on the canal, generally earning 30 cents per day plus room and board. Many recent immigrants to the United States, especially the Irish, survived thanks to jobs on the canals. Other people, like the residents of the communal society at Zoar, also helped construct canals to assist the survival of their community. Many of Ohio’s communities today, including Akron, began as towns for the canal workers. Most canals remained in operation in Ohio until late 1800s. There is a short stretch in the Muskingum Valley near Zanesville still in operation today. By the 1850s, however, canals were losing business to the railroads. Description: Major General Alexander McDowell McCook (1831-1903) is shown in this 3.8 by 6.25- inch (9.77 by 15.88 cm) carte de visite. Alexander was born in Columbiana County to Daniel and Martha Latimer McCook and was a member of the Fighting McCooks. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1852. During the Civil War, he organized the 1st Ohio Volunteer Infantry (O.V.I.) regiment. Daniel McCook, Sr. and his eight sons, together with his brother John McCook and his five sons, fought in the Civil War. Daniel (1798-1863) and John (1806-1865) were born in Pennsylvania, and moved to Lisbon in Columbiana County, Ohio in 1826. Daniel subsequently moved to Carrollton, where he served as Carroll County's first clerk of the court of common pleas. John settled in Steubenville, where he practiced medicine. When President Lincoln made the first call for volunteers, 63-year-old Daniel Sr. answered and his sons and relatives followed. Daniel Sr., Daniel Jr., Robert Latimer, and Charles Morris McCook were killed in the war. Cartes-de-visite, photographic portraits on cardboard, were popular in the late nineteenth century.
